Grant Helps Student, Professor Study Link Between Red Wine and Aging

A Nebraska Wesleyan University psychology professor and her student are spending their summer researching the effects of red wine — or more specifically, a compound found in red grapes —on cognitive skills.

Just a few weeks ago, Nebraska Wesleyan University student James Hamrick was rehearsing lines for the rock musical “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.”

The summer theatre opportunity in his native city of Houston, Texas, would add another experience to his already impressive resume.

Symphonic Band Performs at D-Day Ceremony in Normandy

Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Symphonic Band took a history lesson like no other they’ve taken.

"This will undoubtedly be an experience that our students will never forget," said NWU band director Sam Zitek.

On the 68th anniversary of D-Day, the band traveled to Normandy to commemorate the 1944 Allied Invasion and liberation of France.

It was 2:20 a.m. — well beyond Sheryl Rinkol’s bedtime. Sleep wasn’t an option as she listened to ocean waves slap the side of her cruise ship while it floated 2 ½ miles above the Titanic wreckage.

“It was very surreal,” said Rinkol, assistant director of Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Cooper Center. “It made me think about my own mortality.”

Kyle Rohrich and Alex Cowsky spent the first two weeks of the spring semester in five Spanish cities where they researched public opinion on the Basque conflict.

“I can read plenty of academic journals about what people went through, but it’s so different when you can actually go and hear people talk about it themselves,” said Rohrich.

If you want to be an artist, you have to spend time in New York City, says Nebraska Wesleyan University art professor David Gracie.

It’s where he is spending a year-long sabbatical painting and designing a new course on alternative artistic practices.

It’s an experience so inspiring that he wanted to share it with his students too.

Truman Scholar: NWU Junior Wins One of Nation's Top Academic Honors

A Nebraska Wesleyan University junior has been awarded one of the nation’s highest academic honors.

Chelsea Johnson, a political science major from Johnson, Neb., has been awarded the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Sixty recipients were selected from a pool of 587 national candidates. She is the only Truman Scholar from Nebraska this year.
