Two Nebraska Wesleyan University students have been selected for one of the most prestigious selective summer scholarship programs in the world.

Rachael Kirschenmann of Omaha and Rachel Schmitt of Lincoln will each travel to the United Kingdom for the Fulbright Summer Institute.

A first-year biology student has been selected as a Fulbright summer institute participant.

Two years ago Lindsey Jones received a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship to help enhance her knowledge and experience in science.

Jones was only a sophomore at the time and was one of just 275 students in the country to win the scholarship that honors top science and math undergraduates.

Cody Arenz, Associate Professor of Biology, is on sabbatical for a year in Devon, England.

Two Nebraska Wesleyan University students were recently honored for their research presentations at national science conferences.

Ever since she was 8-years-old, Lindsey Jones wanted to be a doctor.

That was until she participated in a summer biomedical research project and took a genetics class earlier this year that made her realize her passion resided elsewhere.

Nebraska Wesleyan University junior Laura Blasnitz is pretty sure she won’t cure cancer. But she’s hoping her summer research experience will eventually lead to a career where her contributions are important.

“I don’t expect to cure anything in my lifetime,” said Blasnitz. “I only hope to make some kind of substantial contribution to humanity.”

This week NWU biology students are practicing their diving skills in the campus swimming pool. Next week they’ll put those skills to the test on the northwest coast of Roatan, Honduras where they will experience 30 miles of fringing barrier reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves and shoreline.
