Japan: Experience the Culture of Japan with Dr. Steve Wills

May 13 to May 28, 2024

Join Professor Steve Wills on a two-week journey through Japan from May 13-May 28, 2024! Professor Wills is a fluent Japanese speaker who has spent over six years living and working in Japan, and he is an expert in the country’s cultural and social history. The trip is open to NWU students as well as NWU alumni and staff. Students can fulfill their Archway Curriculum Experiential Learning: Intensive requirement by enrolling in INTST-2410, “Experiencing the Culture of Japan.” (It is also possible to join the trip without enrolling in the course.) Over the course of two weeks, the group will travel across the main island of Honshû, learning about traditional culture, exploring Japan’s rich history, and taking in the sights and sounds of a country on the cutting edge of art, fashion, and technology. Potential destinations include Hiroshima, the great castle at Hikone, ancient Buddhist temples in Kyoto and Mt. Koya, and the bustling downtown areas of Osaka and Tokyo. Japanese-language abilities are not required. The estimated cost is $3,300 (includes airfare, ground transportation, all activity fees, and several group meals), subject to change depending on the number of participants. In addition, participants should bring money for individual meals and personal expenses (roughly $700 recommended). Students wishing to enroll in INTST-2410 will also have to pay summer tuition fees ($1,200). Applications and initial deposit of $500 are due to Professor Wills by January 15, 2024; the balance is due February 16, 2024. Please contact Professor Wills (swills [at] nebrwesleyan.edu (swills[at]nebrwesleyan[dot]edu)) with any questions.
