Danielle (Reab) Bayer is this year’s recipient of the Kenneth R. Holder Award. This award honors the legacy of Dr. Kenneth R. Holder who served as an NWU faculty member and subsequently as provost from 1972 until his death in 1991. The award is given each year to a graduating student who has overcome significant challenges in achieving their degree.

On June 19, 1863, Union Army general Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas under President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, General Order No. 3.  Texas was the last Confederate state with institutional slavery. Today, we celebrate the 157th anniversary of the last African American slaves being freed.
