Arkansas-born poet, playwright, educator, and cultural activist Patricia Spears Jones served as New York State Poet from 2023–2025. Her honors include fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She is the author of The Beloved Community, A Lucent Fire: New and Selected Poems, and other acclaimed collections. Jones has taught creative writing at Hunter College, Barnard College, Adelphi University, and Hollins University. Her papers are archived at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
