Final exams are done but the academic experiences are not.

Several Nebraska Wesleyan University students are joining their professors for short-term study abroad experiences this summer including a tour to Ireland by the University Choir and Symphonic Band.

“International travel provides educational opportunities that cannot be duplicated in the classroom,” said William Wyman, director of choral activities. “Experiencing a different culture, language and custom is an important part of a student’s educational experience.”

This marks the first time both ensembles have participated in an international tour together. Their 10-day trip included performances in Westport, Killarney, Clonmel and Dublin. Typically each ensemble participates in an internationally tour every four years.

Wyman said he and Sam Zitek, associate professor of music and director of the symphonic band, selected a tour to Ireland because of the country’s quality performance venues and performance opportunities. In addition to their performances, students explored significant sites including the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney Castle, and the city of Dublin.

“I have always wanted to travel and understand more about my surroundings, and I think this is the greatest way to do so,” said Jake Morman, a 2015 NWU graduate who traveled abroad for the first time. “I hope I come back home more knowledgeable and self-aware with several memories that I will never forget.”

Both ensembles spent much of the spring semester rehearsing the concert repertoire separately and together. The groups also performed their combination pieces at the band’s final concert in early May.

“I’m looking forward to going somewhere that’s different than the United States,” said Chelsea Olmsted, a history major from York who also graduated in May. “I really hope to gain more experience of different cultures while I’m there.”

While in Ireland the musicians saw some familiar faces. A group of alumni joined the tour and attended each of the performances.

In addition to the Ireland tour, other summer study abroad experiences include:

History, Culture and Sport of Ireland, Germany and Netherlands
Pat Pettit, professor of health and human performance, is leading a program to Ireland, Germany, and the Netherlands. Students will learn about the history, culture, and sport in each country by participating in historical walking tours, visiting sporting facilities, and experiencing foods, music, and dance. The trip will also include university lectures where students will meet with local college students.

Kumaica, Nicaragua
Members of Global Service Learning will travel to Nicaragua. The student organization participates in an international service project each summer. While in Nicaragua, NWU students will build a latrine for an elementary school, will organize a school improvement project to include painting, repairing, and landscaping, and will promote hygiene and illness prevention through several presentations to students.

Experiencing the Culture of Tuscany
Communication professor Rachel Pokora is leading students to Italy where they will explore cultural indicators such as verbal and nonverbal communication, food, politics, religious beliefs, and interpersonal relationships. Students will live in apartments in Florence, which will allow them to experience Italian culture first-hand by navigating the streets, shopping, and interacting with local people.
