Maria Becker, assistant professor of physics, has been selected to present this year’s Faculty Scholarship Lecture. This annual lecture recognizes and celebrates the scholarship in our own campus community. Full-time faculty were invited to nominate a colleague or self-nominate for the award with the final selection made by members of the Forum Committee.
Becker's lecture, “Why you’ll never meet Schrödinger’s Cat,” will provide an inside look into her work in quantum decoherence. She described her lecture as follows:
Schrödinger’s cat is simultaneously dead and alive. This type of quantum phenomenon is permitted by Mother Nature, however, we never observe cats exhibiting this behavior. Why not? Why don’t we observe the quantum behavior of Mother Nature in our everyday lives? A possible answer to this open question is a process called decoherence. This same process also makes it very difficult to increase the size of quantum computers. Our research program is designed to investigate decoherence. Student researchers are developing experiments that use acoustic analogues, light-matter interactions, and quantum computing. Our goals are to develop accessible platforms for studying quantum behavior and gain new insight into decoherence.
Becker most recently was awarded the Nebraska EPSCoR First Award (the first NWU professor to win this honor), which came with a $25,000 prize for her continued research in quantum decoherence.
The Faculty Scholarship Lecture will be available via Zoom (link forthcoming).
