US House passes bill which threatens TikTok future in the US

The US House of Representative today passed legislation which threatens the future of the popular social media app TikTok.  The bill passed by a vote of 352 to 65 with 14 House members not voting.  The bill now goes to the US Senate where its future remains uncertain.

The legislation would prohibit app store operators such as Apple and Google from making the TikTok app available at their sites unless TikTok is separated from its Chinese parent company ByteDance.  ByteDance would be given approximately 5 months to divest itself of TikTok after the legislation is passed by the Senate and signed into law.  Interestingly, while banning TikTok from the various app stores, it would not prevent access to the social media platform via web browser.
