Music Scholarships

The Bennett Music Scholarship
These scholarships, named in honor of Oscar “Pop” Bennett, are awarded each year to outstanding prospective student singers who plan to major in vocal music. Scholarships vary in amount and are renewable.

The Marshall Music Scholarship
These scholarships, named in honor of Robert Marshall, are awarded each year to outstanding prospective students who plan to major in instrumental music. Scholarships vary in amount and are renewable.

The Harrod Music Scholarship
These scholarships, named in honor of Beth Miller Harrod, are awarded each year to outstanding prospective students who plan to major in piano. Scholarships vary in amount and are renewable.

The Fosbury Music Scholarship
These scholarships, named in honor of M. Evelyn Fosbury, are awarded each year to outstanding prospective students who plan to major in strings. Scholarships vary in amount and are renewable.

Music Ensemble Participation Scholarship
These scholarships are awarded each year to prospective students who wish to participate in instrumental or vocal ensembles, but who do not intend to major in music. Scholarships vary in amount and are renewable. To receive a Music Ensemble Participation Scholarship (EPS), students must participate in a music ensemble as determined by the music faculty.

Eligibility Requirements for Audition

  • Auditions are open to high school seniors and transfer students
  • Live auditions are encouraged, but video/audio recordings are also acceptable
  • Students must submit a music scholarship application no later than two weeks before their preferred audition date

Audition Requirements

  1. Prepare a program of not more than 10 minutes according to the following recommendations:
    • VOCAL: If auditioning for a Bennett Scholarship, please prepare at least two contrasting selections from standard solo vocal repertoire (art song, opera, folk song, sacred music, musical theatre).  Memorization is recommended.  If auditioning for a Music Ensemble Participation Scholarship, please prepare one or two selections from standard vocal repertoire. Memorization is optional. Use of an accompaniment recording is not recommended.
    • INSTRUMENTAL: Choose quality solo literature to show your talent. Memorization is not required. If requesting an NWU accompanist, please send the music two weeks before your audition. It is not recommended that the student use an accompaniment tape or CD.
    • PIANO: Choose two selections of contrasting style from the standard piano repertoire. Memorization is recommended. Be prepared to sight-read a short accompaniment.
  2. Unless you indicate otherwise on your scholarship application, an NWU accompanist will be provided. Please send the sheet music two weeks before your audition. Music can be attached to the online scholarship application.
  3. Students must have completed their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and returned it to the NWU Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid to receive notification of music scholarship awards.
