A Nebraska Wesleyan University English professor has been named the 2009-2010 Exemplary Teacher by the United Methodist Church Division of Higher Education.
Scott Stanfield was recognized during the university's monthly faculty meeting on Tuesday, October 6. The award recognizes faculty who display excellence in teaching, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to value-centered education, and service to students, the institution, community, or church. Faculty were invited to nominate their colleagues and the final selection was made by President Fred Ohles upon recommendation from the Faculty Development Committee.
Those who nominated Stanfield noted how students appreciate his passion for the literature and his supportive and generous way of helping them understand complex material. He was recognized for leading a variety of independent studies and tutorials and for his work on numerous task forces and committees including a term as faculty president.
Stanfield was also recognized for his community service including leading book discussions as part of “One Book, One Lincoln,” volunteering as an officer for Nebraskans for Justice and as a teacher at the summer Synod School of the Lakes and Prairies Synod of the Presbyterian Church. He is also a member of the faculty band “Release Time” and is a musical volunteer at the South Street Temple.
