Fall International Film Series: "Under the Sun"
Olin B Lecture Hall

The Modern Language Department's Fall International Film Festival continues with the 2015 Russian/North Korean documentary, "Under the Sun."

Despite continuous interference by government handlers, director Vitaly Mansky still manages to document life in Pyongyang, capital city of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, in this fascinating portrait of one girl and her parents in the year that Zin-mi prepares to join the Korean Children's Union the "Day Of The Shining Star." As the family receives instruction on how to be the ideal patriots, Mansky's watchful camera captures details his handlers might prefer left unseen, from comrades struggling to stay awake during an official event to Zin-mi's tears at a particularly grueling dance lesson.

This film is 106 minutes and is not rated.

Olin B Lecture Hall is located in the Olin Hall of Science, one block east of 50th Street and St. Paul Ave. It is free and open to the public.

Visions & Ventures Symposium: author Bryan Stevenson
O'Donnell Auditorium

This year's Visions & Ventures Symposium will investigate the origins of the fear and anxiety that have shaped American public discourse in recent years. This year's theme is "(Di)visions and Ventures: Refocusing Our Lens on American Communities."

The symposium begins with Bryan Stevenson, author of the New York Times bestseller, Just Mercy

Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn't commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinkmanship — and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Just Mercy was a finalist for the 2015 One Book - One Lincoln

Stevenson's talk is free and open to the public and will be held in O'Donnell Auditorium, located in the Rogers Center for Fine Arts at 50th Street and Huntington Ave. A book signing will follow his lecture.

The symposium continues with J.D. Vance, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling book, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.

Vance grew up in the Rust Belt city of Middletown, Ohio, and the Appalachian town of Jackson, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and served in Iraq. A graduate of the Ohio State University and Yale Law School, he has contributed to the National Review and has recently signed on as a CNN Political Contributor.

Visions & Ventures Symposium: author Hanna Rosin
O'Donnell Auditorium

This year's Visions & Ventures Symposium will investigate the origins of the fear and anxiety that have shaped American public discourse in recent years. This year's theme is "(Di)visions and Ventures: Refocusing Our Lens on American Communities."

Our symposium concludes with Hanna Rosin, author of The End of Men.

Rosin is a senior editor at The Atlantic and a founder of DoubleX, Slate's women's section. She has written for The New Yorker, The New York Times, GQ, The New Republic, and The Washington Post. She is the recipient of a 2010 National Magazine Award.

In her book, The End of Men, Rosin reveals how women are no longer gaining on men— they have pulled decisively ahead. Her book explores how the shift in power dynamics between men women at every level of society impacts marriage, sex, children, work and more. Ultimately, Rosin's book helps us understand how, regardless of gender, we can adapt to the new reality and channel it for a better future.

Her free lecture will be held in O'Donnell Auditorium, located in the Rogers Center for Fine Arts at 50th Street and Huntington Ave. A book signing will follow.
