A Nebraska Wesleyan University theatre professor has been recognized for his work in mentoring his peers.

Jay Chipman, professor of theatre arts, has received the 2019-2020 Faculty Mentor of the Year Award. The award recognizes faculty who assist other faculty in improving teaching, foster professional growth and assist faculty in participating meaningfully in service to campus and community.

“Jay makes working for Nebraska Wesleyan a joy,” said a nominator. “His empathy, communication style, love of learning and genuine open-mindedness makes him an outstanding mentor and department chair.”

“Jay and I get together to discuss teaching strategies and learning outcomes,” the nominator continued. “We discuss ways to improve our teaching. Jay never makes you feel small or even like you are the mentee. He wants to learn as much from you as you learn from him.”

Chipman is a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan and has taught at the university for 25 years. Among his previous recognitions, Chipman has won the Prouty Teaching Award, which is the university’s top teaching award.
