Nebraska Wesleyan University is remembering the life of prominent businessman Duane Acklie, chairman of Crete Carrier Corporation, who passed away Saturday, September 17.

Along with his wife Phyllis, Acklie was a generous supporter of Nebraska Wesleyan. He served as chair of the Board of Governors from 1983 to 1986. In 1988 the university recognized him with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

Upon President Fred Ohles’ arrival at NWU in 2007, Acklie became a valued and trusted confidential advisor to President Ohles.

“When Rosemary and I arrived in Lincoln a decade ago, Duane and Phyllis Acklie opened their door and hearts to us,” said President Ohles. “They helped us meet decision-makers all across Nebraska, shared rides with us to the Cattlemen’s Ball, and thoroughly captivated us with their enthusiasm about their home state, its heritage, its people, and its potential.”

In 2009, Acklie delivered the commencement address to Nebraska Wesleyan’s graduates.

Acklie also came to know Nebraska Wesleyan as a parent. His daughter, Dr. Laura Acklie Schumacher, is a medical doctor and a member of the NWU Class of 1978. Her husband, Jeff, is a current member of the NWU Board of Governors.

Services for Acklie are Thursday, September 22 at First Plymouth Congregational Church in Lincoln. See full obituary
