Nancy Newman, director of Student Health Services, has been named one of the state's "best nurses."

At the April 14 campus staff meeting, representatives from the Lincoln Journal Star stopped by and surprised Newman with an announcement that she was named one of the best in the newspaper's annual "Best Nurses in Nebraska" contest.

Last month the Lincoln Journal Star sought nominations for the contest; over 100 nominations were received. Thirty nominees were then selected from that pool and the public was invited to vote. The votes determined the state's 10 top nurses for 2014, which included Newman.

Among the many nominations, Newman was honored for her ability to be a mom to students who are away from home.

Newman was honored with a framed certificate and will be included in a Lincoln Journal Star special insert on Sunday, May 11, in celebration of National Nurses Week.
