Sandra Mathews-Benham, professor of history, has been named the 2015-2016 Faculty Advisor of the Year.

The Faculty Advisor of the Year Award was established by the Academic Affairs Committee of Student Affairs Senate to recognize and reward faculty for the pursuit of excellence in advising.

Students praised Mathews-Benham's tireless efforts to ensure that student needs are met. She advises students on employment opportunities and works with students on different course options to come up with the best plan for their success.

"Above all else, Dr. Mathews is able to emphasize like no other and establish incredible personal relationships with her advisees that make students consider her more of a friend than faculty," said a student nominator.

Mathews-Benham began her career at Nebraska Wesleyan in 1996. She was promoted to assistant professor of history in 1998, and tenured and promoted to associate professor of history in 2003. She was promoted to professor of history in 2010.
