An award-winning filmmaker will speak at Nebraska Wesleyan University to discuss his following of survivors and perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Patrick Mureithi, a native of Kenya and an artist-in-residence at Drury University, will deliver the lecture, “ICYIZERE: hope,” on Thursday, April 7 at 1 p.m. in Olin B Lecture Hall.

Over the course of three years, Mureithi produced, filmed and edited his documentary “ICYIZERE: hope,” which follows 10 survivors and 10 perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Mureithi watched as the Rwandans participated in workshops addressing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The participants realized they were more similar than different, that they are all victims and aggressors suffering from trauma, and that the most effective way to overcome their trauma is by making an effort to forgive each other and work at rebuilding trust in their communities.

The documentary will be shown on Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m. in Olin B Lecture Hall.

Both the film screening and lecture are free and open to the public.
