Sarah Kelen, associate professor of English, has been awarded the NWU Scholar Award.
The award recognizes excellence in scholarly or creative contributions to an academic field.
Kelen studies, publishes, and edits work on late medieval English literature and the reception of Middle English literature during the Renaissance period. In 2007, Kelen published a critical study of the medieval writer William Langland titled, “Langland’s Early Modern Identities.” The study has been praised widely. The Sixteenth Century Journal, for example, said “this volume is well researched and thorough, and seems unlikely to be replaced anytime soon as a critical guide to these materials.”
Kelen is editing a new volume, “Renaissance Retrospections: Tudor Views of the Middle Ages,” which is forthcoming from Western Michigan University Press this year.
The university’s Faculty Development Committee created the NWU Scholar Award last year. David Peabody, professor of religion, was the inaugural winner.
