Communication Scholar to Address Hate and Hate Speech In America

The co-author of the recently published book, The Communication of Hate, will discuss "Hate and Hate Speech in American Life" at a Nebraska Wesleyan University lecture on Wednesday, April 6.

Michael Waltman is an associate professor of communication studies at the University of North Carolina. His research examines the social and political uses of various forms of hate speech, including the role of hate speech in the production of ethnoviolence and hate crime.

Waltman is currently conducting research on discourses that institutionalize hatred in American life. Waltman and his students conduct workshops with children in North Carolina communities that focus on the value and importance of respecting social differences.

His lecture begins 1 p.m. in Callen Conference Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Waltman is delivering Nebraska Wesleyan's Lambda Pi Eta Communication Lecture. Lambda Pi Eta is the National Communication Association's honorary society.
