Dr. David Hopwood Mickey has been personally involved with the entire history of Nebraska Wesleyan University until now.

His grandfather was one of our founders. A grandchild was a student just a few years ago. David himself graduated in the Class of 1939 and then served with distinction as Professor of History for many years. Three decades ago he authored Nebraska Wesleyan’s extensive three-volume centennial history.

Upon the celebration of Nebraska Wesleyan’s 125th anniversary in 2012, we were delighted to award our friend and colleague David Mickey an NWU honorary doctorate. In recent years he was a regular participant at Friday morning 10 a.m. coffee in Cochrane-Woods Library. Those weekly trips to campus continued until his move a couple of years ago to the Nebraska Masonic Home in Plattsmouth.

At the age of 98 years, David Mickey departed this earthly life peacefully Sunday evening, May 15, 2016. He was a man of solid Christian faith, proud of his family, and a loyal member of First United Methodist Church in University Place. We remember him fondly. We honor his remarkable service and devotion to our school. We give thanks to God for his long, productive, engaged life.

A life celebration service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, at First United Methodist Church, 50th Street and Saint Paul Ave. Memorials are designated to the David H. Mickey Endowed Scholarship Fund at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
