LSAMP Summer Transitions Program

Supporting Minority Students in the Sciences

The world’s problems are diverse. The scientists working to solve them must be, too.

That’s why Nebraska Wesleyan University joined the Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (IINSPIRE LSAMP)—a Midwest STEM partnership for innovation in research and education.

Our goal is to see more underrepresented students graduate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). We do this by building students’ identities as STEM scholars, fostering a supportive community and providing more opportunities for STEM achievement

The LSAMP Summer Transitions Program enables admitted Nebraska Wesleyan first-year students to get a jump start on their STEM education. At LSAMP you will:

  • Stay in NWU student housing.
  • Take field trips, attend guest lectures and participate in workshops.
  • Meet STEM professors, students and mentors.
  • Explore internship and research opportunities at NWU and beyond.
  • Build your identity as a STEM scholar.

The community students build over the summer carries into the school year.

  • Join classmates and mentors every month for sponsored dinners.
  • Learn from guest speakers.
  • Attend science conferences.
  • Conduct undergraduate research.
  • Take part in community science outreach.
  • Learn about lab culture.
  • Explore STEM careers.

There is no cost to be part of this life-changing STEM program. All incoming Nebraska Wesleyan students of color with interests in STEM fields are eligible. We welcome referrals of qualified students from high school teachers.

“The LSAMP Transition Program is an indescribable blessing. It’s three days committed to blossoming new friendships, engaging with professors who care for you far beyond the classroom, and hearing the stories of failure and triumph from scientists in your field. The experience was positively beautiful.”

Alyssa Johnson (’19)
