Advocate for Diversity Award Nomination

The NWU Advocate for Diversity Awards honor students, staff, and faculty members who raise awareness about a need, problem, or opportunity regarding issues of diversity and inclusion on campus. Advocates for Diversity inspire others with their vision and advocacy for initiatives to ensure that all students, staff, and faculty feel welcome, engaged, and empowered. Nominees should demonstrate a willingness to challenge stereotypes and be a bridge builder between diverse groups.

Diversity: Diversity is the range of human differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs.

Inclusion: Inclusion is involvement and empowerment, where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized. An inclusive university promotes and sustains a sense of belonging; it values and practices respect for the talents, beliefs, backgrounds, and ways of living of its members.

Process: The Action Council on Diversity and Inclusion will accept nominations until December 8, 2017. Please submit all nominations to T.J. McDowell, Jr.: tmcdowe2 [at] nebrwesleyan.edu or through campus mail. The NWU Action Council for Diversity and Inclusion will review nominations and determine the winners. The student, staff, and faculty members chosen for 2017-18 will be recognized at the NWU Martin Luther King, Jr. Campus Celebration on January 19, 2018. Student Advocates receive a $400 scholarship towards their Spring 2018 tuition. Staff and faculty receive $400 earmarked for professional development activity related to diversity and inclusion.

Please write a statement of 200-500 words explaining why this student, staff, or faculty member should be recognized with an Advocate for Diversity award. The NWU Action Council on Diversity and Inclusion will want to know how the nominee has addressed one or more of the criteria below:

  • How has the nominee raised awareness about a need, problem, or opportunity regarding issues of diversity and inclusion on campus?
  • How has the nominee inspired others with their vision and advocacy for initiatives to ensure that all students, staff, and faculty feel welcome, engaged, and empowered?
  • How has the nominee challenged stereotypes and been a bridge builder between diverse groups?

 

Mary Butler Award Nomination (Student Only)

Acknowledges a junior or senior who identifies as a student of color, and is in good academic standing with the university. This student shall exude an enthusiasm to serve both the Wesleyan and Lincoln community by adding freshness and a new dimension to either their organization(s) or to the people with whom the nominee has been involved. This student should be sensitive and knowledgeable about campus needs and demonstrate the ability to enrich the campus through extracurricular involvement. Qualities to consider are initiative, creativity, responsibility, cooperation, leadership, and concern for others. Nominator must be a faculty, staff, or student of NWU.

  • How does the student exude enthusiasm for serving the NWU and Lincoln community?
  • How has the student demonstrated sensitivity and knowledge about campus needs and an ability to enrich the campus through extracurricular involvement?
  • How has the student demonstrated initiative, creativity, responsibility, cooperation, leadership, and/or concern for others?
