In what is thought to be the first event of its kind, an Uber self-driving vehicle has struck and killed a pedestrian.

The accident happened in Tempe, Arizona when an Uber SUV struck a 49 year old women who was walking her bicycle across a street.  The SUV was operating in fully autonomous mode at the time of the accident, but there was a human driver in the vehicle.  Police are investigating and Uber has pledged their cooperation.  In the meanwhile, Uber has pulled all of their self-driving vehicles off the road.  Uber has been testing their fully autonomous vehicles in several cities, always with a human driver as a backup.
