The Department of Music at Nebraska Wesleyan University provides a rigorous undergraduate educational experience focused on the belief that music is both an artistic and intellectual achievement. This integrated approach helps students develop a strong foundation of practical skills required to excel in competitive job markets, including musical literacy, aesthetic values, logical thinking, critical analysis, historical consciousness, and cultural sensitivity. The faculty includes acclaimed artists and scholars, who are dedicated to the achievement and professional development of our students.
A fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1958, the music department benefits from the active participation of non-majors and majors in the areas of performance, theory, composition, history, and world music. We offer two degree programs: the Bachelor of Music with majors in performance and music education and the Bachelor of Arts with a major in music. The flexible requirements for the B.A. in Music can be complemented with areas of emphasis in applied music, theory, musicology, music technology, or combined with a major or minor in other fields.
The Department of Music is housed in the Rogers Fine Arts Center, which also includes Elder Art Gallery. O’Donnell Auditorium, a 1500-seat concert hall, features a Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano, a Steinway concert grand piano, an Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ, and a Hubbard French double manual harpsichord. Technology in this space supports audio recording and live audio/video streaming. Emerson Recital Hall seats 250, includes a Kawai grand piano, and doubles as a smart classroom. It is adjacent to a recording engineering facility. In addition to student practice facilities and a Roland keyboard lab, the building includes a computer lab. Each workstation is equipped with a Macintosh, MIDI keyboard, and current software for music engraving, web-design, audio/video editing, ear training, music theory, and music education.
