NWU NSF STEM Scholarships

With financial support from the National Science Foundation, Nebraska Wesleyan University will award NWU NSF STEM scholarships for Fall 2018. Applicants for the scholarship must demonstrate past success and future interest in a STEM-field (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) career.

Students are expected to declare a major in either biology, biochemistry/molecular biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics upon entrance to NWU. The program is not intended for students who are devoted to future careers in health care delivery, e.g. physician, dentist, nurse, or other medical field.

In addition to a STEM scholarship, the program will provide students with academic and social support to graduate in four years and successfully pursue either graduate education or a career in a STEM field.

About the NWU NSF STEM Scholarships

  • Seven (7) annually renewable $7,000 NWU NSF STEM Scholarships
  • Selected applicants will receive an annual renewable $1,000 STEM Recognition Scholarship
  • All NWU NSF Scholarship and STEM Recognition Scholarship recipients also receive a Nebraska Wesleyan University Academic Scholarship
  • Application Deadline: December 15, 2017

Applying for the NWU NSF Scholarship

  • Apply to Nebraska Wesleyan by submitting the online application or the Common Application
  • Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Demonstrated financial need is a consideration in selecting the finalists.  Applicants should have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the FAFSA of $26,000 or less.
  • Have a high school cumulative GPA average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 GPA scale and an ACT composite score of 23 with math and science sub-scores no lower than 25

    • A 500-word essay which reveals why science or mathematics is rewarding for you and is important to your college and career goals 
    • Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which needs to be from a teacher in a STEM discipline
  • Submit official high school transcript

  • Submit official ACT scores

  • Send your scholarship application and all associated materials, postmarked by December 15, 2017, to

A selection committee of NWU faculty and staff will review applications and invite 12 finalists to campus for a personal interview. Recipients of the $7,000 scholarship will be notified by phone; recipients of the $1,000 scholarship will be notified by mail.

Scholarship Requirements

  • Declare a major in one of the STEM fields of biology, biochemistry/molecular biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics
  • Live on campus your first year in the same residence hall as other STEM Scholars

  • Finalists will be announced at the STEM Professions Scholarship Event: January 11, 2018
  • On-campus interviews conducted: Week of February 5-9, 2018
  • Scholarship announcement: February 15, 2018

Benefits of becoming a NWU NSF STEM Scholar

NWU NSF STEM Scholars will become a special community of NWU students who are intrigued and excited about science, math and their own STEM field. Each entering cohort of STEM Scholars will begin with an Archway Seminar designed specifically for them and will build relationships in a Fall semester retreat. They will live on campus in the same area their first year and be encouraged to continue doing so. 

Throughout college they will participate in STEM career exploration programs and regular meetings with faculty mentors. Working closely with faculty, each Scholar will complete one or more independent research projects and submit their work for presentation at regional and national conferences, with travel costs covered by the program. Common experiences will help shape each cohort of STEM Scholars into a sort of interdisciplinary team: One individual’s strengths might help serve another individual’s needs as they all pursue their future goals as experts and leaders within science and math research fields, engineering and industry.
