About Huge Society and Events

Since 2007, the Harry (’59) and Reba Huge Foundation has offered select Nebraska Wesleyan students scholarships to pursue their dream of earning a degree in their field of choice. Every student who receives a Huge-NWU Scholarship becomes part of the Huge Society.

Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Chapter of the Huge Society prepares future leaders with an appreciation for cultural diversity across national borders, through active stewardship and community building.

Network Globally, Act Locally (NGAL)

NGAL is a shared program between Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska, College of Charleston in South Carolina and the University of Tartu in Estonia. NGAL brings together students from each university to develop innovative solutions for social and commercial challenges. This international, entrepreneurial program is made possible through the generous support of the Harry and Reba Huge Foundation.

NGAL began in 2015 and challenged six students from each school to form teams and develop a product or service that demonstrated social entrepreneurship. Each interdisciplinary team was made up of a student from each university. Student teams initiated their entrepreneurial idea at the University of Tartu and pitched their project to a field of judges at the College of Charleston.

NGAL 2016 was hosted at Nebraska Wesleyan University. During the week, students visited many of the incubators and start-ups that gave rise to Lincoln’s notoriety as part of the “Silicon Prairie.” Each team was assigned a professional mentor selected from the Lincoln entrepreneurial community. Through this real-world experience, students refined their proposals and presented their closing business pitches to a group of distinguished judges and investors. Faculty from each of the three institutions will provide instruction to students on lean startup methodology, agile-scrum framework, as well as business concept scaling necessary to bring existing products and services to the marketplace. With the foundation of knowledge and expertise acquired while in Estonia, the teams will travel to Lincoln where they will continue to develop their entrepreneurial ideas.

Each year, the event is hosted by one of the participating universities. In 2017, the event was hosted at the College of Charleston in South Carolina.

Spring Estonian Independence Day Celebration (February 24)

Harry Huge played an integral part in securing Estonia’s independence from the Soviets. Today, NWU enjoys a sister-school relationship with the University of Tartu. Huge Society and NWU mark Independence Day with a cake as well as faculty and student speakers who have studied in Estonia or been involved in Estonia-related projects. Estonians studying at NWU are also invited to attend.

Service Project

Huge Society plans and completes an annual service project that reflects the mission of the organization. Service projects take place over the course of a day, a few months, or even a semester, and are planned by October 15 of that year. Projects must include a written plan, an evaluation form completed by other members of the group and a final report prepared by the Huge Society secretary. The report includes details of the project, outcomes, what students learned from the experience, and how they contributed to the community.

Officers

Huge Society elects officers in April for one-year terms beginning the following academic year. The president-elect assumes the presidency upon completion of the president’s one-year term.

Officers include a president, secretary, service coordinator and staff/faculty advisor.
