"The Modern Jungle" Screening, Discussion
Olin A Lecture Hall

The Art Club and Modern Languages Department welcomes to campus Charles Fairbanks, a video artist from Lexington who has produced the film, "The Modern Jungle."

"The Modern Jungle" is a portrait of globalization filtered through the fever dream of a Mexican shaman, don Juan, who falls under the spell of a pyramid-scheme-marketed nutritional supplement. Juan's neighbor Carmen lives simply, in harmony with the land her martyred husband paid for with his life. This film documents their struggles and encounters with outside forces: from capitalism and commodity fetish, to the culture of cinema, and the directors of this film.

A question and answer session with Fairbanks will follow the screening.

This event is free and open to the public. Olin A Lecture Hall is located inside Olin Lecture Hall, one block east of 50th Street and Saint Paul Ave.

Opera: Die Fledermaus
O'Donnell Auditorium

This year's spring opera is "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss.

“Die Fledermaus” — whose titled translates to “the bat” — was composed by Johann Strauss. It’s time for Dr. Falke to take revenge, which includes a plot entailing mistaken identities, adultery, inebriation and imprisonment.

International Film Series: "Your Name"
Olin B Lecture Hall

The day the stars fell, two lives changed forever. High schoolers Mitsuha and Taki are complete strangers living separate lives. But one night, they suddenly switch places. Mitsuha wakes up in Taki's body, and he in hers. This bizarre occurrence continues to happen randomly, and the two must adjust their lives around each other. Yet, somehow, it works. They build a connection and communicate by leaving notes, messages, and more importantly, an imprint. When a dazzling comet lights up the night's sky, something shifts, and they seek each other out wanting something more-a chance to finally meet. But try as they might, something more daunting than distance prevents them. Is the string of fate between Mitsuha and Taki strong enough to bring them together, or will forces outside their control leave them forever separated?

This film is rated PG. The screening is free and open to the public. Olin B Lecture Hall is located one block east of 50th Street and St. Paul Ave.

Holder Lecture: "Spehk thuh speech uh preh yuh — Shakespeare's Original Pronunciation"
Library Learning Commons

Actor, author and producer Ben Crystal will speak on the original pronunciation of Shakespeare and the historical changes made in English.

What did Shakespeare's accent and that of his actors and audience sound like? What can we learn from hearing and speaking his works in that accent? And with no recordings or transcriptions available to us, how do we know? Shakespeare actor and author Ben Crystal explores the fascinating 400-year-old sound of Shakespeare's plays and sonnets — Original Pronunciation — and reveals a world hidden beneath our modern accent readings, discovering rhymes, and a very subtle humour. And a not-so-subtle one too.

The Kenneth R. Holder Lecture was established by members of the Department of English in memory of Dr. Kenneth R. Holder, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of English. The lecture features a scholar in the field of language, English education or composition theory.

The free lecture begins at 4 p.m. and will be held in the Learning Commons, located on the first floor of the library.
