Fetzer Science Lecture: Barbara Oakley
Olin B Lecture Hall

Barbara Oakley, professor of engineering at Oakland University, will present this year's Fetzer Science Lecture titled, "Learning How to Learn: Powerful Mental Tools to Help You Master Tough Subjects." Oakley didn't begin learning remedial high school algebra until age 26. Now she's a professor of engineering, a New York Times best-selling author, and instructor of the world's largest massive open online course.

In her lecture, Oakley will share true stories and intriguing insights from science about how you can change and grow, no matter your age or stage of life including: the study techniques that help — and those that don't, why recall and chunking work, using the brain's different learning modes to best effect, and procrastination and the Pomodoro technique.

Her free lecture begins at 7 p.m. in Olin B Lecture Hall, located one block east of 50th Street and St. Paul Ave.

The Amos Fetzer and Alice Fetzer Memorial Lecture was established by Dr. W.R. Fetzer (’17) in memory of his parents. The lectureship is designed to bring to campus distinguished scholars in science, math, computer science, and the environment.

International Film Series: "Young Goethe in Love"
Olin B Lecture Hall

The International Film Series continues with the 2011 German drama, "Young Goethe in Love." The young and tumultuous Johann Goethe aspires to be a poet but after failing his law exams, is sent by his father to a sleepy provincial court to mend his ways. At first, he tries to do his best and wins the praise and friendship of his superior Kestner. But then Lotte enters his life and nothing is the same as before. However, Johann is unaware that Lotte is in fact already promised by her father to Kestner. The dramatic and unfulfilled love between the poet and Lotte was the template for his masterpiece "The Sorrows of Young Werther."

This film is not rated. The screening is free and open to the public. Olin B Lecture Hall is located one block east of 50th Street and St. Paul Ave.
