The University > Methodist Connection

Nebraska Wesleyan University has changed significantly in size and appearance since its founding in 1887, but it has remained steadfast to the principles of a liberal arts education in an environment of Christian concern. Nebraska Wesleyan is proud of its heritage and affiliation with the Nebraska Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. The University embraces students, faculty and staff of all denominations and beliefs.

University Ministries
The University Minister serves as the campus pastor and is available for personal counseling, religious and vocational counseling and spiritual guidance. Chapel services are held on Thursdays at 1 p.m. in Miller Chapel, located on the first floor of Old Main.

Mattingly Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lecture Series
The Mattingly Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lecture Series was founded in 1989 to honor Ed Mattingly, the well-loved Professor of Religion and chaplain at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

The lecture series honors the historic and contemporary contributions of the United Methodist Church to the Nebraska Wesleyan University by raising awareness of the University's Christian and United Methodist affiliation and contributing to the enrichment of the University Community and all its faith traditions. Each year, Nebraska Wesleyan University selects approximately two Mattlingly Visiting Distinguished Scholars based on their religious and/or theological scholarship or their academic and/or personal connections to the origins, history and/or teachings of the United Methodist Church.

Nebraska United Methodist Church Historical Center
Located on the lower level of the Cochrane-Woods Library, the Nebraska United Methodist Church Historical Center was created in 1968 to preserve the history of United Methodism and its predecessors in Nebraska. The Center is open 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

The Historical Center serves as the official repository for the Archives of the Nebraska Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church; a resource for local churches in the preparation and preservation of their history; and a museum featuring historical treasures of the church.

Individuals seeking historical information are encouraged to visit the Center; research assistance is available if necessary. There is a personal research fee of $30 per hour. Photo copies are 25 cents. Contact the Historical Center offices for researching and appointments.

For more information on the Nebraska United Methodist Historical Center, contact 402.465.2175 or numhc@nebrwesleyan.edu.
