Twenty-nine more hungry children will have more to eat on the weekends thanks to a recent NWU fundraiser.

Empty Bowls 2010On February 27, Nebraska Wesleyan University hosted its annual “Bowls For Backpacks,” a fundraiser for the Food Bank of Lincoln’s BackPack Program, which sends backpacks filled with food home with area elementary school students on Fridays to ensure they don’t go hungry over the weekend.

The event raised $5,800, which will provide backpacks to 29 additional Lincoln-area children. Approximately 8,700 children live below the poverty line in Lancaster County.

The Bowls For Backpacks event featured hundreds of homemade ceramic bowls crafted by Lincoln area school students, after-school program participants, college students, civic organizations, teachers and trauma patients.
