Nebraska Wesleyan to Host Third Annual Bowls For Backpacks Fundraiser

More than 14,000 kids under the age of 18 live below the poverty line in the Lancaster County area.

Nebraska Wesleyan University hopes an upcoming fundraiser will help feed some of those hungry children and families.

On Sunday, February 27, Nebraska Wesleyan University will host Bowls For Backpacks: An Empty Bowls Event. All proceeds will benefit the Food Bank of Lincoln’s BackPack Program, which sends backpacks filled with food home with students on Fridays to ensure they don’t go hungry over the weekend.

Bowls For Backpacks: An Empty Bowls Event will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Story Student Center dining hall on the NWU campus. Online ticket sales are now closed but tickets can still be purchased at the door.

Tickets for Bowls For Backpacks are $15 and will purchase soup, bread, drink and a ceramic bowl. Last year’s event raised nearly $5,500 for the Food Bank of Lincoln.

Guests attending the event will have their choice of nearly 500 handmade ceramic bowls crafted by Lincoln area school students, college students, NWU alumni, civic organizations, teachers and trauma patients.

The BackPack Program began in 2004 at Clinton Elementary School. The program grew from providing dozens of backpacks to hungry children to the 2,668 backpacks that are being distributed to students in area public and parochial schools this year.

It costs $200 to feed one student for an entire school year. Over the past two years, NWU’s Bowls For Backpacks raised enough money to provide 60 food-filled backpacks for area elementary students. But the need is far greater.

The handmade bowls will be on display at LUX Center for the Arts February 4-25. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The bowl display is free and open to the public. A reception will be held Friday, February 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. LUX Center for the Arts is located at 2601 North 48th Street.

In addition to the handmade soup bowls, several large ceramic centerpiece bowls will be available for purchase at the event for $30 and $50.

The Nebraska Wesleyan University faculty band "Release Time" will perform throughout the event. Band members include Frank Ferraro, Scott Stanfield, Jeff Isaacson, Larry McClain, Mary Hawk, Patty Hawk with special guest Candace Howell.

Those who purchase tickets to the Bowls For Backpacks fundraiser can also attend the NWU theatre musical Company at a discounted price. Simply show your Bowls For Backpacks ticket at the theatre box office and you can see the musical for $7.50. This offer is good for one performance. Company will be performed February 24-27 and March 3-6 in McDonald Theatre.
