former u.s. hhs deputy secretary to discuss presidential leadership styles

LINCOLN, Neb. — A Syracuse University distinguished professor of public administration will discuss "Presidential Leadership: Style and Substance" at an upcoming Nebraska Wesleyan University lecture.

Walter Broadnax, Distinguished Professor of Public Administration at The Maxwell School of Syracuse University, will give a lecture on Friday, May 1 at 4:30 p.m. in Callen Conference Center.

Broadnax's knowledge of presidential leadership styles comes from his vast experience in politics and education. From 1993 to 1996, Broadnax served as President Bill Clinton's Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Until 2008, he served as Clark Atlanta University's second president. Prior to his presidency, Broadnax served as Dean of the School of Public Affairs at American University in Washington, D.C. and as Professor of Public Policy and Management in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Maryland, where he also directed the Bureau of Governmental Research.

Broadnax has held key positions in state government as President of the New York Civil Service Commission and as the Director of Children, Youth and Adult Services for the State of Kansas. He currently serves on numerous advisory boards including the Return to Flight Taskforce and the Advisory Board of Harvard University's Taubman Center.

A reception will precede Broadnax's lecture at 3:45 p.m.

Callen Conference Center is located on the lower level of the Smith-Curtis Administration Building. It is free and open to the public.
