LINCOLN, Neb. — A Nebraska Wesleyan University sophomore has been awarded a prestige scholarship from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Taryn Overton of Lincoln has received the Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship, an award designed to increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education.
The scholarship provides up to $8,000 of academic assistance per academic year for full-time study during the student’s junior and senior years; a 10-week paid internship at NOAA, a housing subsidy and travel expenses for the internship.
Overton said her interest in science began early and was solidified through her experience in the Lincoln Public Schools Science Focus Program. She plans to obtain a degree in veterinary medicine and ultimately work with marine endangered species and facilitate wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and release.
To be eligible for the Hollings Scholarship, students must be full-time junior academic status in fall 2008, earn a cumulative 3.0 grade point average, and major in a discipline area related to oceanic, environmental, and atmospheric science.
Approximately 100 Hollings scholarships were awarded nationally this year.
