seminar will educate students on sound financial decisions

LINCOLN, Neb. — You don’t have to be a finance major to know that sound money management skills are important to your success.

The National Student Loan Program (NSLP) and the Nebraska Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators are joining forces to provide free seminars to college students across the state on topics like budgeting, credit and debt, and identity theft.

Nebraska Wesleyan University students will have the opportunity to attend the seminar on Wednesday, April 2 at 3:15 p.m. in room 220 in the Smith-Curtis Administration Building. This event coincides with “Nebraska Financial Literacy Week,” which was proclaimed by Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman.

“College students need to be able to identify and manage realistic financial goals,” said Sharon Cabeen, NSLP’s Vice President of Financial Literacy. “They have to be adept money managers to be sure they budget properly, don’t get overextended on credit and debt, and that they can repay their obligations, including their student loans.”

The goal of “Nebraska Financial Literacy Week” is to enhance the money management skills of college students and raise public awareness about the importance of a sound financial education for young adults, said Cabeen.

Students will also be able to use NSLP’s Financial Literacy Online (www.nslpflonline.org), a free program which offers six basic personal finance courses that students may complete at their convenience. Course topics include budgeting, credit, credit history, identity theft, financing education and contracts. Students who complete courses are eligible to win scholarships to help pay for education expenses.
