choir to join lincoln symphony for performance of st. matthew passion

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Wesleyan University Choir will join the Lincoln Civic Choir, the University of Nebraska at Kearney Choraleers, and the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra for a performance of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion.

The concert will be held at the Lied Center for Performing Arts on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m.

J.S. Bach’s masterpiece recounts the story of Christ’s crucifixion by setting the Gospel of Matthew to music. Completed in 1727, Bach’s Passion is noted for its richness, its grand scope, and is called one of the most ambitious musical compositions of all time. As Leonard Bernstein put it, “There is nothing like it in all music.” While there is some controversy over the year St. Matthew Passion was first performed, there is no doubt that it was first performed as part of a Good Friday service. Accordingly, it is most often performed near Easter. This version will be sung in German with English supertitles.

Tickets for this performance are $45, $35, and $30. College students will a valid I.D. and youth age 18 and younger may purchase tickets at half price.

Call the Lied Center ticket office at 402.472.4747 or 800.432.3231. Regular ticket hours are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. For weekend evening performances, the Lied ticket office is open from 3 p.m. through intermission. The Lied Center is located at 301 North 12th Street in Lincoln.
