leading anti-sexist male activist to examine masculinity and presidential campaigns
LINCOLN, Neb. —Jackson Katz, one of America’s leading anti-sexist male activists, will evaluate media images of the 2008 presidential election during an upcoming Nebraska Wesleyan University lecture titled, “It’s the Masculinity, Stupid: Media Images of Manhood in U.S. Presidential Campaigns.”
An educator, author, and filmmaker, Katz is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in the field of gender violence prevention education with men and boys, particularly in the sports culture and the military. He is the co-founder of the Mentors In Violence Prevention (MVP) program, the leading gender violence prevention initiative in professional and college athletics.
In analyzing presidential elections, Katz focuses on the gendered nature of men’s voting patterns and choices, and places special emphasis on representations of presidential masculinity. His presentation examines imagery from presidential campaigns in the television era, especially since the 1980 election of former Hollywood actor Ronald Reagan. His discussion will include a look at the 2008 presidential campaign as well as gender politics of the war in Iraq and the war on terror and how they have been used to market candidates and political parties.
Katz’s lecture will be held Thursday, February 28 at 1 p.m. in Olin B lecture hall, located within the Olin Hall of Science at 51st Street and St. Paul Ave. It is free and open to the public.
