chinese musician to bring guzheng sound to wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. —Internationally renowned guzheng virtuoso Mary Li Ma, will bring the sound of China’s most ancient instrument to Nebraska Wesleyan University’s annual World Music Concert.

The free concert will be held Tuesday, September 25 at 7:30 p.m. in O’Donnell Auditorium, located at 50th Street and Huntington Ave. in Lincoln. A free workshop will be held at 3 p.m.

Born in Xi’An China, Ma has been playing the guzheng since the age of eight. The guzheng (pronounced “goo jung”) is a plucked stringed instrument that is a member of the zither family and sounds similar to a harp.

In 1995, Ma was the recipient of the Oriental Cup of National Juvenile Guzheng. She continued her musical education at the China Conservatory of Music, where she was the youngest member of the Chinese Young Artists Group. Following graduation, she served as a guzheng director at the Beijing Contemporary Institute. In 2000, she was instrumental in introducing Chinese guzheng music at the Falun Folkmusic Festival in Sweden. As a much sought after musician, she has also conducted many workshops and given numerous performances at American universities and concert halls, including Carnegie Hall.

The annual World Music Concert is sponsored by the Nebraska Wesleyan University Wolf Fund for Diversity Programming, NWU Professor Janet Lu, NWU Music Department, and the NWU Global Studies Program.
