legendary rapper chuck d, pulitzer prize winner to headline wesleyan symposium
LINCOLN, Neb. —Chuck D, the legendary rapper and co-founder of music group Public Enemy, will be in Lincoln September 12 to deliver a message about race, rap, reality, and inequality at Nebraska Wesleyan University’s annual Visions & Ventures Symposium.
Public Enemy rose to fame with their explosive debut album in 1987, redefining rap music and the Hip Hop culture. Nearly two decades later, Chuck D continues his success going beyond rap music to discuss topics as diverse as current politics, internet file-sharing, and the health of the music industry. He most recently became a major proponent of, and spokesperson for, the sharing of music on the internet.
The Hip Hop pioneer’s lecture, “Race, Rap, and Reality,” will begin at 8 p.m. in O’Donnell Auditorium, located at 50th Street and Huntington Avenue in Lincoln. Chuck D joins a list speakers scheduled for the two-day symposium titled “The Politics of the Arts.”
The symposium’s other headliner will include Suzan-Lori Parks, the first African American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for the Broadway hit, “Topdog/Underdog.” She is currently writing her next novel and “Ray Charles Live,” a musical based on the life of Ray Charles.
Other symposium speakers include Gregg Bordowitz, Associate Professor of Film, Video, and New Media, The School of The Art Institute of Chicago; W.J.T. Mitchell, Professor of English and Art History, University of Chicago; and Pat Graney, Founder, Pat Graney Dance Company.
Chuck D’s lecture will be preceded with a performance by the Chiara Quartet, who was recently named the Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard University in addition to their ongoing artist residency at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
All events will be held in O’Donnell Auditorium and are free and open to the public.
