wesleyan students receive national security exchange program scholarships
LINCOLN, Neb. — Two Nebraska Wesleyan University students will be heading overseas for language research after winning a National Security Exchange Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship.
Lindsay Priefert of Lincoln and Deseree´ Johnston of Clearwater have each received NSEP scholarships, which provide funds for American students to study in world regions that are critical to U.S. interests.
Priefert was selected to study in Jaipur, India, where she will participate in the Minnesota Studies in International Development Program. The program includes courses on India’s development challenges and Hindi language. The scholarship also provides an internship with a development organization and opportunity for research on a development issue of the scholar’s choice. Last month, Priefert was also awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to Indonesia, where she will teach English. Priefert will graduate from Nebraska Wesleyan on May 19.
Johnston, a sophomore political science major, will also study Hindi in India and focus on development work. In June, Johnston will join Nebraska Wesleyan Political Science Professor Bob Oberst in India where they will complete a Student/Faculty Collaborative Research Grant and examine the state of West Bengal and its status as the world’s longest democratically-elected Communist government.
A third Nebraska Wesleyan University student, Megan Hershiser of Lawrence, Kansas, was selected as an alternate for an NSEP Scholarship to Thailand.
This year, 141 students were selected from a pool of 729 applicants for the NSEP Scholarship. |
