NEBRASKA WESLEYAN KICKS OFF THEATER SEASON WITH "THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE"

LINCOLN, Neb. -Nebraska Wesleyan University will open its theater season with a play that combines Shakespeare and Saturday Night Live.

An abridged version of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare will open Friday, September 5 and will continue through September 7th with other performances scheduled for September 11-13.

Nebraska Wesleyan theater professor and play director Jay Scott Chipman describes the production as Shakespeare as written by Reader’s Digest, acted by Monty Python, and performed at the speed of light. The show takes the audience on a roller coaster ride of all 37 plays in 90 minutes.

“The audience can expect the unexpected, fast-paced humor, goofy costumes and props, and bits of all of Shakespeare’s plays,” said Chipman. “And they can expect to laugh a lot!"

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare is just one of many traditional and contemporary versions of Shakespeare’s plays to be performed at Wesleyan this year.

"Selecting the ‘Celebrating Shakespeare’ theme allows us to present Shakespeare’s best known and loved plays as well as contemporary versions of Shakespeare’s work,” said Chipman.

To prepare for the productions, students are rehearsing much earlier to become better acquainted with the language and characters. In addition, Roger Cognard, Wesleyan English professor and Shakespeare expert, is helping students interpret the text.

Other productions scheduled this year are A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, Donkey Show, and Hamletmachine.

“Hopefully the season as a whole will nurture the love for Shakespeare’s writing in the community, will serve to introduce Shakespeare to children and young audiences, and will remind people of what a marvelous writer he was,” said Chipman.

All performances for The Complete Works of William Shakespeare will be held in Miller Theater, located in the Elder Memorial Speech and Theatre Center at 51st and Huntington Ave. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for students ages 12-18, $5 for college students and youth under 12, and $5 per ticket for groups of 10 or more. Box office hours are 2-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
