WESLEYAN STUDENTS MEET PRINCE CHARLES DURING
SHAKESPEARE STUDIES TRIP
LINCOLN, Neb. - Fourteen Nebraska Wesleyan University
students who recently retuned home from a study trip to Britain
are showing off some royal souvenirs that are a rare find.
Snapshots of Prince Charles shaking their hands now adorn their
walls and scrapbooks. Students reveled in their opportunity to meet
the prince during the celebrations marking the 450th anniversary
of Stratford –upon-Avon in Britain. Student Mitch Raftery
of Omaha said the encounter with British royalty and the ability
to see how the local people respond to him showed the students the
history, respect, and connection that the British feel for their
monarchy.
This was the fifth year for the Shakespearean Studies in Britain
course, led by Drs. Roger Cognard, an English professor at Wesleyan,
and Anne Cognard, a teacher at Lincoln East High School. During
the trip, the group saw six plays at both the Royal Shakespeare
Theatre in Stratford and the newly restored Globe Theatre in London.
Before each performance, a Shakespeare scholar lectured to the students
about the play; often, an actor from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre
company joined them for discussion after the play.
Not only did the group see plays in two of the world’s
most renown theatres, but they also visited Broughton Castle, where
the movie Shakespeare in Love was filmed; traveled to Ragley Hall,
a seventeenth-century manor house in Alcester, England; and toured
the quaint Cotswald villages of central England.
While on the trip, the students encountered another celebrity,
Oscar-winner Dame Judy Dench, who they were able to discuss British
theatre with.
