Nebraska Wesleyan University to Participate
in National Day of Silence
Lincoln, Neb. Students at Nebraska Wesleyan
University are taking steps to increase access to underrepresented
students on their campus. On April 10, students will participate
in the Day of Silence Project to call attention to the specific
issues that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people
face at universities and to demand change on campus that will improve
the lives of these students.
The Day of Silence is a day on which those who
support increasing accessibility for LGBT students in education
take a nine-hour vow of visible silence. Instead of speaking, participants
hand out cards explaining the reason for their silence and stating
their demands for change on campus. The day is used as a tactic
in a campaign to end the continued silencing of gay people due to
homophobia.
Participating students, faculty and staff will
be silent all day to communicate their feelings regarding prejudice
towards LGBT individuals. Additionally, a silent lunch
has been organized to allow participants to eat and reflect in silence.
Faculty and staff who must spend their day either answering phones,
teaching, etc. will have an opportunity to show their support.
For more information regarding the days activities,
