Nebraska Wesleyan University to Stage Snakebit

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan University Theatre will present Snakebit Thursday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Enid Miller Theatre; subsequent performances will be Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Snakebit by David Marshall Grant is a study of modern friendship when put to the test, the play centers on Jonathan and his wife, Jenifer, visiting their oldest friend, Michael, at his home in Los Angeles. Jonathan is in Los Angeles auditioning for a film, potentially his first big break, and he’s brought Jenifer with him for support. Jenifer is distant because their daughter was left at home with a relative and she’s become ill. Michael is distracted because one of the children he counsels was beaten and put in a hospital where he cannot see her. At first the focus is on universal questions of self-doubt and the human need for support. With complications due to the arrival of a guest, the play asks viewers to recognize the ugliness of selfishness and the importance of love.

Playwright David Marshall Grant began his career as an actor with roles on Broadway in The Survivor, Bent and Angels in America, for which he received Drama Desk and Tony nominations. His film credits include French Postcards, Air America and The Rock. His first play, Snakebit, received critical acclaim when it opened off-Broadway in 1999. It received 1999 Drama Desk and Critics’ Circle nominations for best play.

Stage direction is by Scott R. Feldman, a senior at Nebraska Wesleyan receiving his BA in Theatre Arts and Business Administration this May. Feldman has previously directed Foreplay: Or the Art of the Fugue by David Ives and Line by Israel Horovitz.

Performances are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted benefiting the Nebraska Wesleyan Theatre Department. The Enid Miller Theatre is located in the Elder Memorial Speech and Theatre Center, 51st Street and Huntington Avenue. Contains Adult Language.
