Nebraska Wesleyan University Opera Theater to Stage Gianni Schicchi and Gallantry

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan Opera Theater will present an opera twin bill Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee performance Sunday, April 7 at 3:00 p.m. Puccini's masterful comic opera Gianni Schicchi will be presented with Douglas Moore's Gallantry.

Gianni Schicchi is the only comic opera written by Puccini, its considered by many opera lovers as heir to the Romantic Italian opera tradition established by Giuseppe Verdi. In it, Donati family members solicit the help of Gianni Schicchi to assist them in dividing the estate of Buoso Donati. Schicchi, a well-known rogue, pretends to be the dying Buoso and dictates a change of the Donati will to leave all the estate to himself. The conniving family members are completely outdone by Gianni Schicchi in this one act opera. Henry Blanke, long time Director of Theater at Nebraska Wesleyan, is Stage Director.

Gallantry is a one-act soap opera satire. The story presents a dramatic moment in the daily soap opera's eternal suspense. In a bizarre love triangle, Dr. Gregg loves his assistant Lola, who is engaged to his patient, Donald. Donald is scheduled for surgery with Dr. Gregg, who has other motives as he prepares to operate. The action is interrupted by several commercials. Jana Holzmeier, music professor at Nebraska Wesleyan, is the stage director. Dr. William Wyman will conduct the orchestra for both operas.

General admission tickets are available at the door at a cost of $5 or may be reserved by calling 465-2269. O’Donnell Auditorium is located in the Rogers Center for Fine Arts at 50th Street and Huntington Avenue.
