The Wesleyan Advantage Bachelor of Science in Organizational Communication degree program helps students examine how organizational culture is created, maintained, and influenced through communication. Learn the traditional functions of management—planning, organizing, leading and controlling—and the roles of moral code and ethics in managerial decision-making. Three specialization areas will help you focus on human resources, public relations, marketing, or project management skills.
Communication is the backbone of every organizational culture: public, private, for-profit, and nonprofit. When an organization sells goods or services, the public relations, marketing, and sales departments are responsible for communicating and interacting with consumers, the media, and other external groups to make sure the company succeeds. Additionally, effective internal communication to employees, to management, and between departments is essential to organizational success.
The Bachelor of Science in Organizational Communication helps students develop oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as critical thinking and problem solving so they will be able to communicate their ideas effectively and understand the businesses within which they work. Organizational communication looks at informal and formal communications, leadership, intercultural communication, and diversity issues, as well as types of internal communications within a business. Students may specialize in human resources, public relations, marketing, or project management.
Advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, sales, customer service, human resources management, business writing/editing, and project management skills are highly coveted. Organizational Communication degree graduates with related experience, a high level of creativity, and strong communication and computer skills should have the best job opportunities. In particular, employers will seek those who have the skills to conduct new types of advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales campaigns involving new media, particularly the Internet.
In addition to solid oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, critical thinking, listening, nonverbal communication, and problem-solving abilities are valuable assets.
The program consists of 30 hours of coursework in the major. In addition, students will choose 15 hours of courses in one of three specialization areas: human resources, public relations, or project management. Also, there are 6 hours of electives designed to meet your specific interests.
General education requirements for graduation from Nebraska Wesleyan University must be fulfilled by all candidates for any baccalaureate degree, including the Bachelor of Science in Organizational Communication.
Classes meet one night a week from 6 p.m.– 10:15 p.m. in five- and eight-week sessions.
