Psychology Major (B.A. or B.S., 34 — 36 hrs.)

The Psychology major is designed to provide a student with basic knowledge and research skills in the field of psychology. Students experience a variety of learning formats, including lectures, class discussions, seminars, laboratories, field study, and practicum placements. By the time of graduation each student will have conducted their own empirical research investigation. The degree for each student will be determined in conjunction with the department chair, based on the overall composition of the student's program.

  • PSYCH 225, 292, 294, and 299 (11 hrs)
  • One of the following: PSYCH 160, 165, 170, 180, 212, or 215 (3–4 hrs)
  • One of the following: PSYCH 130, 140, 203, 217, or 231 (3 hrs)
  • Psychology electives (3–4 hrs)
  • Must have 12 hours of upper level (200–299) credit in the major

Biopsychology Major (B.S., 66 hrs.)

The Biopsychology major is a multidisciplinary program of study designed for students who are interested in the interaction of psychological and biological phenomena, and/or the biological bases of behavior and cognition. Biopsychology is a particularly well suited major for those who wish to pursue graduate study in the areas of physiological, biological, or clinical psychology, neuropsychology, neuroscience, and medical school.

Industrial/Organizational Psychology Major (B.S., 56 — 57 hrs.)

The Industrial/Organizational (I/O) psychology major is administered by the Department of Psychology. It is a multidisciplinary program of study designed for those students who are interested in the interaction of psychological and organizational phenomena, and/or the social psychological bases of human behavior and the work environment. I/O psychology is a particular well suited major for those who wis hto pursue graduate study in the areas of industrial/organizational psychology, management, social psychology, or experimental psychology. Many I/O majors also seek employment immediately upon graduation.

I/O Psychology Major Objectives:
Students in the NWU psychology program with a major in I/O psychology will demonstrate:
  • A broad–based understanding of the concepts and research findings of experimental, applied, and historical psychology.
  • Mastery in the concepts, procedures, and logic of the scientific method.
  • A broad–based understanding of the concepts, practices, ethical principles, and social influences inherent in the workplace environment.
  • The ability to apply scientific methodology to the unique culture and challenges of the workplace.
  • A basic understanding of the interconnections between the fields of psychology and business administration and their integrated application to societal issues and concerns.
  • An understanding of research ethics as well as the ethical implications of the application of industrial/organizational psychology principles.

  • PSYCH 217, 220, 225, 292 and 299 (15 hrs)
  • One of the following: PSYCH 160, 165, 170, 180, or 212 (3–4 hrs)
  • One of the following: PSYCH 118, 203, or 231 (3 hrs)
  • Required Business Course: BUSAD 100, 115, 225, 239 (12 hrs)
  • One of the following: BUSAD 227, or 231 (3 hrs)

Psychology Minor (18 hrs.)

To obtain a minor in psychology, a student must successfully complete (with a grade of C or higher) 18 hours of psychology, at least nine of which are taught by the Psychology Department at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

  • One of the following: PSYCH 160, 165, 170, 180, 212, or 215 (3–4 hrs)
  • One of the following: PSYCH 130, 140, 203, 217, or 231 (3 hrs)
