Phi Alpha Theta
From the national Phi Alpha Theta website
Phi Alpha Theta Website
"We are a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways."
Membership in Phi Alpha Theta
(www.phialphatheta.org, adapted for NWU membership)
We induct new members into Phi Alpha Theta generally every other semester. Nebraska Wesleyan University's PAT chapter, the Tau-Xi chapter, invites students to join who have the qualifications listed below.
Individual memberships sent directly to the National Office are not acceptable and will be returned. Our one-time initiation fee of $40.00 per student is payable at the time of initiation. This fee includes a membership certificate and four issues of our journal, The Historian. Membership in Phi Alpha Theta is a lifetime membership. NWU also requires our initiates to pay an additional $5 for local fees. Thereafter, there are no annual dues or fee.
To become a Phi Alpha Theta member, an Undergraduate student must complete at least 12 semester hours in History (4 courses) with a GPA of at least 3.4 in History, have a GPA of 3.2 or better overall, and have completed and passed a 200-level history course. Membership is not limited to History majors.
Each year, members of Phi Alpha Theta have the opportunity to present their papers at the statewide Phi Alpha Theta conference, often held in conjunction with the Missouri Valley History Conference in March. Winning papers receive awards and are asked to present at the biennial national Phi Alpha Theta conference.

NWU's History Club
The History Club provides an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in learning about the past and hopefully ensures that its members have a good time while doing it. It generally meets on the first Thursday of each month at 1:30, and we use that time to plan upcoming events. Some of the activities the club participates in are historically based movie nights, museum trips to cities such as Kansas City and Chicago, and lectures. Its members also are given the opportunity to assist with the Wesleyan held History Day. The History Club allows students with similar interests to interact with each other in a less structured environment than a classroom, and as a relatively new organization, it offers numerous possibilities to hold leadership roles. It’s a great experience and an entertaining way to gain a more tangible insight on the past.
