Curriculum Expansion
Phase I: Asia

Overview

Faculty members of the Global Studies program, an interdisciplinary major/minor at Nebraska Wesleyan University, propose that the university coordinate its curricular and extra-curricular efforts related to mission and marketing by establishing an on-going university-wide global focus in its programming and curriculum.

Nebraska Wesleyan University has a long history of promoting global study. Liberal arts education in the 21st century will inevitably emerge as global education. Drawing upon expertise among our current faculty, the proposed university-wide global focus will promote synergy among Forum lectures, on-campus programming, course offerings, faculty development, and international education (prestige scholarship opportunities for students and faculty, Global Service Learning, travel/study courses, and semester/year abroad experiences).

For the first phase, we recommend a focus on Asia:
2006-2008     India
2007-2009     Southeast Asia
2008-2010     China

The two-year duration for each region and overlapping years proposed above allows for interconnections among the three focal points in Asia, which, to be sure, are not the only places in Asia to be highlighted. They do serve, however as major points of departure. Rapidly emerging as a significant economic and political force, Asia seems a natural place to begin a university global focus. In addition, Lincoln and Nebraska has a significant Southeast Asian immigrant population as well as Indian and Chinese immigrant populations. Perhaps most important, currently 61 out of every 100 people on planet earth live in Asia--truly this is the century of the Pacific Rim.
