Students to Travel to England
In July, 2003, a group of majors and non-majors alike will travel to England with Dr. Roger Cognard and Dr. Anne Cognard to visit London, Stratford, and other Shakespearean sites in English 270, Shakesperean Studies in Britain. Watch this site for their photos!
Campus Journalists Honored
Among the NWU students honored this year with Nebraska Collegiate Media Association Golden Leaf awards was English/History double-major Luke Klinker, who placed first in the sports story category and third in the sports feature category. Trisha Randolph and Brad Wellman also won awards.
Majors sweep Boatrights
Although the Flintlock publishes work by students in any department, this year's Boatright prizes for writing all went to English majors. The first place award for prose went to Erika Bruening (English/Music); the second place award for prose went to Lindsey Pinkerman. Poetry award winners were Ryan Kathman (Language Arts), first place; a cory vander tuig (English/Music Education), second place; and Laura M. S. Fortney (English), third place. The Boatright award for artwork went to Stephen Lambert for his drawings.
Ebmeier wins Fifth Annual Carlos Camacho Humorous Writing Prize
Senior Laura Ebmeier took time off from student teaching to pen "Searching for Tube Tops," this year's Camacho prize winner.
Ianno and Klinker Outstanding Senior Scholars
Leslie Ianno and Luke Klinker (English/History) have been selected by the Executive Committee of NWU's Phi Kappa Phi chapter to share the Phi Kappa Phi Scholar Award for 2003.
Ryan Kathman USA Today Academic All Star Honorable Mention
Ryan Kathman (Language Arts) was one of just three Nebraska students (and two NWU students) honored by USA Today as one of their 2003 Academic All Star.
Luke Klinker earns 2002 National Scholar-Athlete Award and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
Luke Klinker (English/History) was one of just fourteen football players nationwide to win the National Scholar-Athlete Award from the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Klinker was the only NAIA scholar-athlete selected this year. Luke also won an NCAA Postgraduate Fellowship, giving the department back-to-back fellowships after Beth Haley won one in 2002.
English Students Rule
Adam Vander Tuig (English/Music) and running made Danielle Nielsen have been elected as the President and Vice President of Student Affairs Senate for 2003-2004. Congratulations! First year English major Nicole Green was elected as Humanities Division Representative, offering good prospects for future SAS leadership from among the department ranks.
Sigma Tau Delta Revived
After a hiatus of several years, the campus chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honorary society, was revived this year under the guidance of Dr. Kathy Wolfe. Fourteen majors and three minors were inducted into the chapter this year.
Laura M. S. Fortney interns with Prairie Schooner
Laura Fortney is putting her writing emphasis area to work in an internship this semester at Prairie Schooner, a nationally-recognized literary journal published by the University of Nebraska.
2002-2003 English Students On the Road
The following English students took their studies on the road this year: Erika Bruening (English/Music) spent Spring 2003 in Malta; Jillian Craig spent the year in Australia; Amanda Miller (English/Spanish) spent Spring 2003 in Chile; Chris St. Pierre (English/French/Philosophy) spent Spring 2003 in Finnland; Natalie Wolf spent Spring 2003 in Germany. Amanda Frederick spent Spring 2003 participating in the Urban Life Center program in Chicago.
Cooper Center Hires Seven English Students
Among the Cooper Center's eleven peer consultants for the 2002-2003 academic year are the following eight English majors and minors: Alaina Bartunek, Erika Bruening, Amanda Frederick, Leslie Ianno , Jason Kisling, Danielle Nielsen, and Tanya Nodlinski. Thanks for all of your good work.

2001-2002 News

Beth Haley Graduates with Honors, wins NCAA Postgraduate Fellowship
Beth Haley (English/Secondary Education) graduated with honors, May 2002. She will begin work as a teacher in Blair, NE. Beth was also awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Fellowship (one of only 87 women's fellowships in the country). Beth intends to pursue a Master's degree in Education or Educational Psychology.
Two English Grads Accepted to NU Law
Both Scott Farmen (English/Psych 2002) and Ryan Phillips (English 2002) were accepted for admission to Law School at the University of Nebraska. Farmen will start in Fall 2002; Phillips will take a year off and begin in 2003.
Boatright Prizes 2002
Ben Gotschall won both the prose and poetry Boatright prizes this year. Other Boatright winners were: Laura Ebmeier (prose, 2nd place); Laura M. S. Fortney (prose, 2nd place); Andy Marinkovich (Photography; 1st place); Tess Sparks (photography, 2nd place). The Boatright prizes honor work published in the Flintlock.
Zimmerman wins Camacho Award
Josh Zimmerman was awarded the 2002 Carlos Camacho Humorous Writing Award for his short story "Spring Break: An Orgy of Sex, Booze, and Sin. And I Missed Out."
Students Present Research at 4C's
In March 2002, Michelle Miller and Chris St. Pierre, along with Drs. Cypert and Wolfe, presented their scholarship at the Conference on College Composition and Communication in Chicago, as part of a panel on "Language and Action in the Wesleyan Tradition." 4C's is the leading national conference for teachers of writing at the college level, and Chris and Michelle were among very few undergraduate presenters.
Faculty News: Anne Cognard Named Nebraska Teacher of the Year
Dr. Anne Cognard (Engl/Educ) was named Nebraska State Teacher of the Year for 2001. Dr. Cognard teaches at both NWU and Lincoln East High. Congratulations, Dr. Cognard!
Klinker Named All-American
Luke Klinker (English/History) was named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-American Team in football.
Major Requirements Changed
Current English majors should note that the requirements for the major have been changed. The new major requires three (instead of four) survey courses and three (instead of two) courses in the emphasis area. If you wish to follow the new major, you have to redeclare with the Registrar's Office. There is a full checklist of the courses for the new major online.
English Students Study Abroad
Beth McQueen (English/French) spent Fall 2001 studying abroad on Reunion Island as part of her major in French; and Jason Kisling (English minor) spent the 2001-2 academic year studying in Japan.
English Students LAS Student Instructors
Leslie Ianno, Britt Johnson (English minor), Minkyoung Kim, Michelle Miller (English/WS), Ryan Phillips, Sarah Seib (English/History), Tess Sparks, and Chris St. Pierre (CS/English/French/Psych) were all student instructors for Fall 2001 Liberal Arts Seminars.
