Simple Personal Safety Tips

  • Walk with a friend and be alert to your surroundings.
  • Never walk/jog/run alone at night, and walk with confidence.
  • Never run with headphones on. It reduces your ability to be completely aware of your surroundings. The Weary Center's Field House is open until 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and 9 p.m. on Sundays. Runners are welcome.
  • Listen and act on your instincts. If it doesn't feel safe, it isn't.
  • Have your key/fob ready to open your car/house or hall door, especially at night.
  • Remember, your keys can be a defensive weapon.
  • Park in well-lit areas and avoid parking next to vans, pick-ups and other larger vehicles. Large vehicles can provide concealment for a thief making it more difficult for a passersby to observe the thief's activity.
  • Always check to see that your car is locked when you leave it. Avoid leaving books and items of value lying visible in the vehicle. Put them in the trunk instead.
  • Do not leave your car keys in your car.
  • Entrance doors to residence halls/units should never be propped open. The locks are designed to allow only residents of the hall to have access. Propping doors will allow non-residents to enter, jeopardizing yours and others' safety.
  • Never overload yourself with packages. If you must have your hands full, visualize how you would respond if approached, how would you get your hands free etc.

Report suspicious persons immediately to NWU security at 432.9238.

Don't hesitate to call 911 if you sense something is not right!
