Residential Community > Residential Hall Staff
To assist in building a community, building skills, and learning to live and study together, each residential facility is staffed by professional educators, called residence life coordinators (RLCs), and peer assistants (PAs). Their role is to assist each resident in becoming more assertive, learning how to resolve conflicts in a civil manner, developing individual identity as a person of worth, and becoming a citizen leader in the building.
Residence Life Coordinators (RLCs)
The residence life coordinators are members
of the administrative staff at Nebraska Wesleyan. They live
in the residence halls amongst the students not only to ensure
the safety of each student but, more importantly, to create
an atmosphere within each residential facility that encourages
and promotes active development of important life skills and
academic success.
Peer Assistants (PAs)
The peer assistants are the key to the success
of Wesleyan's residential campus. They are a group of students
dedicated to giving their peers personal and academic assistance
and guidance. PAs are responsible for creating and organizing
social, educational, and developmental programming efforts
on their floors and in their buildings. Additionally, they
act as a resource person, coordinate social activities and
community standards and enforce University policies and state
laws.
Peer Assistants are selected through a rigorous application and interview process. Interested candidates complete a written application that requires them to reflect on important relationships they have made and fostered and to stretch their imaginations by describing their ideal living community. All applicants then go through group and individual interviews. The group interview process allows the professional Residence Life staff to see the candidates in action and observe their group communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. In the individual interview, candidates are asked tough questions about ethics, confidentiality, and relationship building. Thus, Nebraska Wesleyan strives to ensure that the student staff is more than qualified to be the support system that residential students need and deserve.
